‘Kathireekaa’, a 24-minute documentary that speaks against Bt brinjal, was launched in Chennai on Tuesday. The movie was put together by actress Rohini and filmmakers Vasanth and Cheran.
The documentary has Tamil actors, writers, doctors, activists and farmers speaking against the genetically-modified food. It seeks to mobilise opinion against the introduction of Bt brinjal in this part of the world.
“Brinjal is just the beginning. Are we not manipulating nature? Should we fiddle around with nature for temporary solutions?” asked Rohini. Vasanth said: “The Tamil Nadu government should not be silent in this issue. Though West Bengal and Orissa are the largest producers of brinjal, people of Tamil Nadu are the largest consumers.”
Noted Carnatic vocalist T M Krishna said, “Tomorrow they will genetically modify other things too. I am going to speak against genetically modified foods in my concerts too.”
Meanwhile, the artistes and activist groups have decided to come under a single banner called ‘Safe Food Alliance’, which is aimed at preventing the entry of genetically modified food into the country.
