Jayaram's house attacked, 8 arrested!

A group of people, said to be activists of Nam Tamizhar Iyakkam attacked the house of Jayaram in Chennai, threw stones at window panes, damaged his Hyundai Accent parked under the portico and set fire to a sofa kept for visitors.

Police sources say that several members of Naam Tamizhar raising slogans entered Jayaram’s house on Lakshmi Street in Valasaravakkam around 5.45 pm on Friday evening. The actor was away for a film shoot. They say that eight people were arrested.

The attack was following his allegedly derogatory remarks about Tamil women in an interview to a Malayalam television channel a few days ago. He had commented about his domestic help as “dark, fat, buffalo like Tamil woman.

Various organisations and activists have demanded unconditional apology from him following which in a statement here today the actor said his remarks had been misinterpreted.

Said Jayaram: ''I have been in the Tamil film industry for 23 years and never have I hurt the feelings of Tamils. If at all, my recent comments had disturbed women folk, I set out to seek an apology'.

The government has accorded police protection for the actor's house.
